A property described as the UK’s greenest house is up for sale but buyers are baffled by the bizarre stairs.

The home, aptly named The Green House, has been listed on the market for £1.5million. It is full of sustainable features such as passive solar design and complete insulation.

There is also underfloor heating. But house hunters have been left baffled by the odd stairs found in the kitchen. What looks to be just a set of cupboards in the cooking area, which actually act as a staircase leading to one of the balcony areas. The peculiar feature has caught the attention of many, with one viewer questioning: “How do you get onto the worktop though? Do they need to pull out a set of steps from a cabinet?”

Located near Newark-on-Trent, Nottinghamshire, the five-bed house is built within a Georgian walled garden. Over the last 20 years, owner’s Anna and Allan Joyce have built the property into what is known as the UK’s most sustainable home.

Listed on RightMove by estate agents Gascoigne, the glass-fronted home is kitted out with a home office, a studio and a workshop. Allan, who was the architect for the build, said: “It’s rare these days to have a home that offers so much space but is also efficient to run.

“Living sustainably is incredibly important to us and led me to install a rainwater harvesting system and heat recovery and solar collection to ensure as an architect I have the lowest impact on the planet. Our home is still the most sustainable building I’ve ever designed.”

Luke Saywell, partner at Gascoines, added: “An opportunity to live in a property like this doesn’t come around often; it’s one of a kind and we’re looking forward to working with Allan and Anna to find the next owners.

“The property has so much to offer to a range of buyers and we know the next owners will fall in love with the unique design, sustainable features and endless potential it has to offer. We’d highly recommend viewing in person to get a real feel for the space and surroundings.”
