Protesters threw objects at police officers in the English town of Rotherham on Sunday as some of the demonstrators attempted to break into a hotel being used to house asylum seekers.
UK Prime Minister Keir Starmer strongly condemned the attack on Sunday on the hotel, describing it as “far-right thuggery” as more violence broke out in several towns and cities across the country in the wake of a stabbing rampage at a dance class that left three girls dead and many more wounded.
False rumours, spread online that the suspect was a Muslim and an asylum-seeker, led to the protests that have seen immigrants, police, and Muslims attacked.
In a statement from 10 Downing Street on Sunday afternoon, the prime minister vowed that the authorities will “do whatever it takes to bring these thugs to justice.”
