Five House in Texas, USA
Located on a tranquil street in Denton, TX, this “granny-flat” serves as a peaceful retreat for the homeowner’s extended family and guests. Designed as a thoughtful addition to the property, the new guest house sits on part of the lot that once housed a horse stable. When the owners sought to incorporate a guest house and pool, they prioritized a design that would complement the main 1949 mid-century modern residence while paying homage to the historic character of that era.
The design of the guest house, aptly named Five House, is distinguished by its simplicity and the use of a limited material palette, which enhances the natural interplay of light and shadow across its façade. The structure features a board-formed concrete frame that grounds the building, while a sleek, mono-slope standing seam metal roof appears to float atop a delicate clerestory ribbon of glass, lending the house a light, airy feel. The exterior is clad in hearty Brazilian Cumaru wood, which introduces a rich vertical texture that flows from the façade to the outdoor decks and even the ceilings, giving the structure a cohesive, organic character.
The project is organized along a strict 5-foot planning grid, a design discipline that earned it the name Five House. This precise organization informs both the layout and the architectural details, ensuring a harmonious flow throughout the space. The living room and bedroom open onto expansive outdoor decks through pocketing glass walls, which create a seamless connection between indoors and out. Rolling solar screens and a generous roof overhang provide shade and privacy, while the orientation of the house along a North-South axis takes full advantage of the natural landscape and poolside views.
At approximately 700 square feet, Five House is a compact yet meticulously designed structure. Positioned at the southern end of a 50-foot lap pool, the house creates a striking visual terminus, engaging with the landscape in a way that both honors the history of the site and embraces the simplicity and functionality of mid-century modern design.
