Held on the third Monday in February, Washingtons Birthday or Presidents Day celebrates our first President, plus Abraham Lincoln, other presidents, or all of them, depending on what state you’re in.
The federal holiday is still Washington’s Birthday. By the early 2000s, almost half of the states in the U.S. had changed the holiday’s name to Presidents Day on their calendars in honor of Washington and Lincoln or all U.S. presidents.
Gov. Ron DeSantis recently added George Washington’s birthday to the Florida state calendar for 2026 as part of America’s sesquicentennial.
Banks, government offices, mail delivery, schools and some businesses will be closed. Will stock markets be open?
Here’s what to know.
When is Presidents Day?
Presidents Day is commemorated on the third Monday in February every year. In 2026, that’s Monday, Feb. 16.
Washington’s actual birthday was Feb. 22, 1732. The holiday was moved as of 1971 to give federal employees a three-day weekend. Later, some states that had been celebrating Lincoln’s birthday (Feb. 12) combined the two into Presidents’ Day.
Is the stock market open on Presidents Day?
The New York Stock Exchange will be closed on Monday, Feb. 16 and will reopen for trading at normal hours, 9:30 a.m. ET to 4 p.m., on Tuesday, Feb. 17.
NYSE American Equities, NYSE Arca Equities, NYSE National, and NYSE Texas late trading sessions also will be closed.
After Monday, the stock market schedule will be business as usual until the markets close again on Friday, April 3, for Good Friday.
Is Nasdaq open on Presidents Day?
Nasdaq will be closed Monday and will reopen at normal trading hours on Tuesday.
Is the U.S. bond market open on Monday, Feb. 16, 2026?
The U.S. bond market will be closed for President’s Day, according to the Securities Industry and Financial Markets Association, and will reopen at normal hours on Tuesday.
Is over-the-counter trading open on Washington’s Birthday?
Over-the-counter trading, which is done without an exchange, will be closed on Monday, Feb. 16.

Are international markets open on Presidents Day?
The London Stock Exchange, EuroNext, Hong Kong Stock Exchange and Tokyo Stock Exchange will be open normal trading hours on Monday.
