Google Expands Virginia Investments With New Workforce Training Programs And $15 Million Energy Fund

Google announced new investments in Virginia to support skilled trades training and energy affordability programs as the company continues to expand its presence across the Commonwealth. The announcement was made alongside Virginia Governor Abigail Spanberger during an event at the Richmond Electricians’ Joint Apprenticeship Training Committee facility.

Google, which has operated offices and data centers in Virginia for more than 15 years, said the latest initiatives are designed to create economic opportunities, strengthen infrastructure development, and support local communities as demand for technology infrastructure grows.

According to the company, its Virginia data center investments and operations supported more than 17,000 jobs in 2025 and contributed approximately $2.3 billion to the state’s gross domestic product.

As part of the announcement, Google is providing funding to the Electrical Training Alliance (etA) to help local apprenticeship programs expand their capacity. The initiative is expected to support an additional 2,741 apprentices by 2030, increasing the projected pipeline of new electricians in Virginia by approximately 135%. The effort is part of a broader Google.org initiative to prepare more than 300,000 skilled trades workers nationwide.

Google also unveiled a $15 million Virginia Energy Impact Fund intended to help reduce household utility bills through projects involving home repairs, weatherization, and energy-efficiency upgrades. One of the first recipients of the fund will be FLIPP Inc., which plans to use the support to expand its Trades Workforce Development Program and help train workers capable of delivering energy-efficiency improvements across the state.

The company said its broader approach to energy development in Virginia includes investments in more than 500 megawatts of new energy capacity, support for emerging technologies such as fusion energy, and collaboration with partners across the PJM electricity grid to expand generation resources, including hydropower, while helping maintain affordability for consumers.

Google said the investments reflect its long-term commitment to Virginia and are intended to ensure that the growth of technology infrastructure delivers benefits for local communities through workforce development and expanded access to affordable energy.
