A turbulent stretch for U.S. equities introduces an unpredictable element next week: a Federal Reserve under new leadership, at a moment when investors fear that interest rate increases aimed at curbing inflation might undermine stock market enthusiasm. Market participants are keen to observe how Fed Chair Kevin Warsh manages his debut gathering as head of the central bank, a highly anticipated Wall Street event that often triggers sharp asset price fluctuations.

Jim Baird, chief investment officer at Plante Moran Financial Advisors, noted that a relatively new Fed leader can sometimes face difficulty in delivering the appropriate message and executing it effectively, with the market closely analyzing every statement.

After impressive surges, major stock benchmarks have moderated so far in June. The S&P 500 recently declined more than 2% from its record closing peak on June 2. The Nasdaq Composite slipped roughly 4.5% from its high on that same day. Wall Street’s fear gauge, the Cboe Volatility Index, hit two-month highs this week, while the main averages experienced notable daily fluctuations, including advances on Thursday and Friday.

Technology stocks have spearheaded the pullback, just as they propelled indexes upward in vigorous rallies from the market’s yearly low in late March. Investors are wary of an overheated rally amid strong optimism about AI-driven earnings, despite risks such as developments in the Middle East conflict and its impact on energy costs and inflation.

Investors also tracked trading in Elon Musk’s SpaceX after the rockets and AI firm made its long-awaited stock market debut on Friday. SpaceX shares climbed 19% that day, pushing its market capitalization above $2 trillion.

The S&P 500 remains up more than 8% year-to-date, while the Nasdaq has gained over 11%.

Fed Likely on Hold, for Now

Any possible interest-rate increase by the Fed could pose obstacles for equities by elevating borrowing expenses for consumers and businesses, and by making bonds more attractive investments. Although the Fed is broadly anticipated to maintain steady rates when it issues its monetary policy statement on Wednesday, investors will seek clues about policymakers’ future outlook.

Warsh was selected by President Donald Trump, who frequently criticized the central bank and former Fed Chair Jerome Powell for not reducing rates to his preference. Fed fund futures indicate market expectations that the central bank will raise rates by year-end, based on LSEG data.
