A Reform MP has claimed Nigel Farage is being “hounded” after the party leader’s £4 million property portfolio was revealed.
The Times reported that Reform’s party leader now owns at least five mortgage-free homes with his partner Laure Ferrari, only two of which have been declared to parliament.
Reform’s Danny Kruger appeared to dismiss the report, claiming this was a “transparent attempt” to disable Reform’s rise.
He wrote on X: “The hounding of Nigel Farage and his family over their personal finances and living arrangements is a transparent attempt by established power – in the government and the media – to disable Reform because of the threat the party poses to their privileges.
“All these attacks haven’t revealed a single incidence of wrongdoing. They’re playing the man and not the ball. The British public will see that, and see it is unfair, and it won’t work.”
Farage is already under investigation by the parliamentary watchdog after he failed to declare a £5m donation from a crypto-billionaire Christopher Harborne shortly before he decided to run for parliament.
If found guilty, he could be suspended from the Commons and – if the suspension is 10 days long or more – he may have to fight a by-election.
The Times’ report has raised further questions around the MP’s transparency.
Land Registry records obtained by the newspaper show the Clacton MP has properties spanning Surrey, Essex and Kent, and all but one were bought with cash in the last six years since the UK left the EU.
The last home was secured in 2017 after he broke up with his second wife.
Farage, arguably the most prominent Brexit campaigner, is now facing questions over whether he registered his position correctly with parliament amid wider transparency worries.
The MP for Clacton has insisted that his declarations are within parliamentary rules and a spokesperson told The Times “everything had been checked by the registrar”.
“Mr Farage will not be drawn into answering questions about the private living arrangements of family members, relationship matters, or the detailed use of private homes,” the spokesman said.
Only two of his properties are registered under the land and property section of the register of members’ interests.
Farage told The Times his five-bedroom grade II-listed property with 7.5 acres of Surrey woodland is his main home, but he spends “half his week” at a property in Clacton owned by his partner Ferrari.
The latter does not need to be declared as Farage does not own it.
His third home, in a Kent village where he used to live with his second wife, is not declared on his register of interests and is occupied by one of his adult children.
The MPs’ code of conduct exempts MPs from declaring homes occupied by family or friends.
Farage also owns two beachfront properties in Kent through his company, Thorn in the Side Ltd, but only one has been declared.
The Clacton MP said one of those homes was not on the register because it was declared separately under the “shareholdings” section.
Farage has not necessarily breached the rules because the MPs’ code of conduct is not clear on corporate ownership.
However, his extensive property portfolio draws into question his 2017 claim that he was “skint”.
