US President Donald Trump is set for a series of bilateral meetings during his two-day visit to the United Nations General Assembly in New York.
US President Donald Trump is set for a busy two-day visit to the United Nations General Assembly in New York, with meetings scheduled with several world leaders and New York City Mayor Zohran Mamdani.
Nearly 130 heads of state are expected in New York for the UN gathering as the international system faces growing tensions and the United Nations continues to face criticism from Trump and his administration.
Trump is expected to arrive in New York on Monday afternoon and attend “political events” at Trump Tower that evening, US Ambassador to the UN Mike Waltz told reporters.
On Tuesday morning, Trump will address the UN General Assembly.
“The president will highlight how he has and his administration have confronted complex problems head-on around the world,” Waltz said.
“He will touch on the importance of ensuring that Iran never has a nuclear weapon.”
The ongoing US-Israeli war with Iran is expected to feature prominently during Trump’s meetings, amid continuing regional tensions and attacks by Yemen’s Iran-aligned Houthi militants.
Trump is expected to discuss the conflict with leaders of the Gulf Cooperation Council before hosting a reception for the group.
During the reception, he is also expected to hold his first in-person meeting with Delcy Rodriguez, the interim president of Venezuela, who is backed by Washington following the ousting of former Venezuelan President Nicolas Maduro.
Trump to meet New York mayor
Trump is also scheduled to meet Mamdani on Monday at the mayor’s official residence, Gracie Mansion.
Mamdani’s office said the meeting would focus on “issues affecting New York City and New Yorkers.”
The two politicians have criticised each other’s policy positions and have sharply different political views. However, their first meeting at the White House last November was described as friendly, while Mamdani called their second meeting earlier this year productive.
A White House official confirmed the planned meeting.
Zelenskiy meeting expected
Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskiy is also expected to meet Trump in New York on Tuesday.
Zelenskiy said on Sunday that he and Trump had agreed to meet during the UN gathering, although he did not specify the date.
A person familiar with the matter said the meeting was expected to take place on Tuesday. The White House did not immediately respond to a request for comment on the possible meeting.
Zelenskiy said separately that the meeting could help advance diplomatic efforts over the war with Russia.
Trump is also scheduled to hold separate bilateral meetings on Tuesday with British Prime Minister Andy Burnham and Japanese Prime Minister Sanae Takaichi.
The meeting with Burnham will be their first in-person meeting.
Trump is further expected to meet Iraqi Prime Minister Ali Faleh al-Zaidi at some point during the UN gathering, according to Iraqi media reports.
The UN General Assembly is also expected to focus on major international issues including the conflicts in Iran and Ukraine, alongside other global challenges.
