Almost nobody buys Invesco QQQ Trust (NASDAQ:QQQ) for income. Even so, its dividend has grown about 75.0% over the past five years. Over roughly the same period, the fund’s share price rose 87.4%, so the payout has kept close pace with the price.
QQQ’s latest four quarterly distributions added up to $3.09182 per share. The four quarters ending September 2021 paid $1.76671. Plenty of retirees and near-retirees hold the Nasdaq-100 fund purely for growth, and many of them have a growing income stream they’ve never paid much attention to.
Where a $490 Billion Tech Fund Gets Its Dividend
QQQ had $490.1 billion in net assets as of June 30, 2026. Its prospectus sets out the payout rules: “Generally, dividends from net investment income, if any, are declared and paid quarterly by the Fund.” The fund “also intends to distribute its net realized capital gains, if any, to shareholders annually.”
Net investment income is simply what the fund collects in dividends and interest, minus its operating expenses. That means QQQ’s payout depends entirely on what its holdings pay. The largest holdings as of June 30 include Nvidia (NASDAQ:NVDA) at 7.6% of net assets, Apple (NASDAQ:AAPL) at 6.7%, Microsoft (NASDAQ:MSFT) at 4.4%, and Amazon (NASDAQ:AMZN) at 4.0%.
