Carry Trade Gains Momentum Amid Middle East Ceasefire and Falling Volatility in 2026 – News and Statistics

DoubleLine Capital and Van Eck Associates Corp. are among investors finding renewed appeal in a currency strategy that is accelerating as a ceasefire in the Middle East helps stabilize markets and revive risk appetite, according to a report from Bloomberg.

Carry Trade Dynamics

The carry trade, which involves borrowing in low-interest-rate currencies and investing in high-yielding ones, was already thriving as the conflict drove oil prices higher, boosting commodity-linked currencies like Brazil’s real and Colombia’s peso. Now the trade is receiving an additional boost from the relative easing of international tensions, which has caused volatility in currencies, bonds, and stocks to decline. This environment gives investors confidence that exchange rates will not move sharply against them, as occurred in 2024 when the trade unraveled and disrupted markets broadly.

Bank Recommendations

Banks such as Citigroup Inc. and Goldman Sachs Group Inc., which have been advocating various versions of the strategy for weeks, are maintaining their positions. One common iteration of the trade—borrowing in the Japanese yen to purchase a basket of the Brazilian real, Colombian peso, and Turkish lira—has gained approximately 12% so far in 2026, marking the best yearly start in three years.

According to RBC Capital Markets strategist Luis Estrada, carry is back in control. He noted that markets have recovered losses too quickly for most investors to join, prompting a shift from hedging to a yield-seeking approach as volatility drifts lower.

The decline in market turbulence has energized trades across various asset classes. In bonds, wagers that U.S. Treasuries will outperform interest-rate swaps—a bet that benefits from low volatility—received a lift from the ceasefire, while the S&P 500 Index reached a record high this week.

Optimism and Recommendations

Anna Wu, a cross-asset strategist at Van Eck, stated that the perception of the war ending is now the baseline scenario, even if that view may be overly optimistic. She highlighted that South American foreign exchange and yields are particularly strong due to their connections to commodities, making them attractive for carry-trade bets.

At RBC, Estrada recommends betting on gains in the Brazilian real against the yen and the Chilean peso. Citigroup’s recommendations include the Mexican peso, the Brazilian real, and the Turkish lira. Goldman Sachs strategists have been advising clients to wager on an equally weighted basket of currencies, including the Turkish lira and Nigerian naira, against the U.S. dollar.
