Caruthersville police warn of counterfeit U.S. currency

CARUTHERSVILLE, Mo. (KFVS) – The Caruthersville Police Department is asking businesses and people to double check the cash in their possession amid reports of counterfeit bills circulating in the Heartland.

Police say counterfeiters are getting more sophisticated, and they say you can’t rely on just one indicator to tell if a bill is real or fake.

Investigators say there are safety measures designed into U.S. currency to tell if a bill is legit. Individuals might need to use more than one safety feature to check if a bill is real or fake.

Safety Features include:

  • Feeling the paper for the distinctive texture of genuine U.S. Currency
  • hold it up to the light to check for security threads and water marks
  • Look for color-shifting ink and sharp, high-quality printing
  • Compare a suspicious bill to one you know is real

Officers say it’s important to contact police if a fake bill is spotted. Never pass a bill that is known to be fake. If it is safe to do so, provide a description of the person that passed the bill.
