ING Analysis: Dollar Rally, Energy Prices, and Currency Outlook for Mid-2026 – News and Statistics

Financial markets have recently shown renewed enthusiasm regarding a possible Middle East peace agreement and the potential restart of energy shipments from the Gulf region, according to a note from ING. However, the firm questions whether such developments would lead to significantly lower energy prices. The analysis emphasizes that inflation has become entrenched, and few central banks can overlook the current inflation shock.

Over the past eight weeks, a major shift has occurred: investors now anticipate that the Federal Reserve will tighten monetary policy. This expectation has alleviated concerns about a politically influenced Fed and is fueling a cyclical rebound in the U.S. dollar. Given a resilient U.S. labor market, inflation above 4%, and the possibility of higher energy costs, ING suggests that dollar strength could persist into the third quarter. The widely forecast dollar decline now appears to be a scenario for 2027.

Within the G10 currency group, the euro against the dollar could see a brief dip to the 1.13/14 range, even if the European Central Bank raises rates again at its July or September meeting. The British pound appears vulnerable as the Bank of England hesitates on tightening, and a change in prime minister could occur swiftly. The dollar-yen pair risks moving higher, with foreign exchange intervention continuing to prove ineffective. Currencies supported by energy exports and hawkish central banks should remain insulated.

Emerging market currencies are facing pressure, but ING and its team still favor outperformance of the Czech koruna and the Hungarian forint. The Polish zloty is expected to lag due to a less hawkish central bank. Idiosyncratic factors are also emerging: the Israeli shekel has been affected by both the technology sector sell-off and intervention.

At the center of the energy shock remains Asian foreign exchange. Policymakers are deploying all available measures to stem the decline, but face significant challenges. Only heavily managed currencies, such as the dollar-yuan pair, appear truly contained until the inflation shock and dollar rally subside.
