Treasury Secretary Scott Bessent revealed a mock-up last Thursday of a proposed $250 bill featuring President Donald Trump to commemorate the nation’s 250th birthday.
No living person has appeared on U.S. currency since 1866, when federal law barred the portraits of living individuals from appearing on currency. The proposed $250 note would require congressional approval to allow Trump’s likeness to appear on the note.
The $250 bill would also become the highest-denomination bill issued. The $100 bill featuring Benjamin Franklin is the largest denomination in circulation.
The U.S. did previously print large notes including $500, $1,000 and $10,000. In 1969, Treasury Secretary David M. Kennedy announced denominations larger than $100 would no longer be issued or circulated to the public.
