Yen surges to 3-week high as dollar wobbles ahead of c.bank meetings

Investing.com — The Japanese yen surged to a near three-week high on Thursday, heading for its best daily performance in nearly a month as a persistent retreat in the U.S. dollar and a pullback in global bond yields sparked a broader recalibration across major foreign exchange bourses.

The U.S. Dollar Index, which tracks the greenback against a basket of six major peers, fell 0.2% to 101.58 – touching its lowest level since October 1. Confidence in the greenback has been rattled in recent sessions by wobbles across AI-related tech equities and corporate debt markets, driving institutional allocators toward liquid duration and non-dollar currencies.

Attention is rapidly turning to a blockbuster slate of central bank policy meetings scheduled between October 28 and 30, where major monetary authorities in Washington, Tokyo, and Frankfurt are broadly expected to deliver “hawkish holds” – keeping benchmark interest rates unchanged while signaling a readiness to tighten further if inflationary pressures persist.

“One can only conclude that the biggest market driver at the moment is the heavy and concentrated positioning in US tech and the dollar, which is being gently pared back,” said ING’s Chris Turner.

“Expect FX traders to keep a very close watch on the short end of the US curve now.”

The Japanese yen emerged as the primary beneficiary of the dollar’s retreat, snapping out of its October consolidation channel and forcing short-covering flows.

The yen rose sharply, pushing the USD/JPY pair down 0.66% to 157.07 – breaking cleanly below its 50-day moving average and touching its strongest level in nearly three weeks.

While money markets have fully priced in an interest rate hold from the Bank of Japan at its upcoming meeting, investors are scrutinizing Governor Kazuo Ueda’s updated inflation projections.

Swaps markets are increasingly pricing in the BoJ’s next rate increase – taking the benchmark to **1.50%** – for early next year.

Persistent fears of official currency intervention by Japanese authorities near the 158.00 handle continue to discourage traders from rebuilding aggressive long-dollar positions.
