Brent traded above $110 a barrel as attacks near the Strait of Hormuz threatened supplies and U.S. data pointed to another crude-stock draw, fuelling inflation concerns even as strong earnings offered some relief to tech investors.

South Korea, Taiwan lead chipmaker rebound

The MSCI Asia Pacific index climbed 1.1%, snapping two sessions of losses. South Korea’s KOSPI jumped 3.7%, while Taiwan’s Taiex gained around 1.4%, as semiconductor stocks led the recovery. Japan’s Nikkei 225 and the TOPIX advanced over 1%.

The rebound followed fresh evidence of strong demand for AI computing infrastructure. Super Micro said it expected quarterly revenue of $18.5 billion to $19.5 billion, well above its previous guidance of $14.5 billion to $15.5 billion and analysts’ expectations.

SpaceX reported quarterly revenue of $14.6 billion, up 161% year-on-year, and profit of $4.4 billion, supported by rapid growth in its AI business.

Its results helped restore some confidence in AI-linked companies after concerns about valuations, financing requirements and the returns on heavy infrastructure spending unsettled markets last week.

AI infrastructure stocks nevertheless saw sharply divergent moves. South Korean data-centre company Elice Group surged around 30% in Seoul, rebounding after one of the country’s weakest IPO debuts on record. Its shares had opened 16% below their offering price and subsequently plunged as much as 33% on Tuesday.

Australia’s NextDC, however, sank around 40% after cutting its financial outlook as delays to electricity-network upgrades at its Melbourne M3 data centre postponed contracted capacity and revenue.

Regional stocks mixed as Japan trade misses forecasts and CATL slumps

Japan’s September trade data were weaker than expected, with exports and imports both missing forecasts and the trade deficit widening more than anticipated.

Elsewhere, Hong Kong’s Hang Seng fell 0.2%, mainland China’s CSI 300 slipped 0.7% and the Shanghai Composite lost 0.4%. Australia’s S&P/ASX 200 eased 0.1%, while New Zealand’s NZX 50 rose 0.7% and Singapore’s Straits Times Index gained 0.8%.

Indonesia’s Jakarta Composite fell 1.12%, while India’s Nifty 50 futures declined 1.1%.

China’s Contemporary Amperex Technology (CATL) shares slumped 8% to a 15-month low after the world’s largest EV battery maker reported weaker-than-expected third-quarter earnings, with profit growth slowing to its weakest pace in nearly two years amid cooling Chinese auto sales and intensifying competition.

Attention now turns to a busy earnings slate for evidence that companies can justify the substantial capital being poured into computing infrastructure.

Meta Platforms and Tesla are due to report later on Wednesday, with investors watching closely for updates on AI investment and consumer demand.
