Euro bonds stagger on French deficit fears and AI corporate issuance squeeze

Investing.com – Eurozone government bond yields held largely unchanged on Tuesday, consolidating near multi-year peaks as fixed-income desks weighed sticky energy price pressures and looming political friction in Paris against a massive wave of global corporate debt supply competing for institutional capital.

Germany’s 10-year government bond yield – the benchmark for the single-currency bloc – was virtually flat around 3.477%, while the policy-sensitive two-year German Bund yield edged lower to 3.099%.

Across the Rhine, France’s benchmark 10-year OAT yield stalled near 4.888%, remaining anchored near multi-decade highs as duration allocators demand a elevated spread over core risk-free paper.

Parisian fiscal woes and energy spike re-inject inflation risk

Investor anxiety over Paris’s record public debt load – hovering near 120% of GDP – and its projected 5.4% budget deficit continues to cast a shadow over continental debt bourses.

With political friction intensifying ahead of the 2027 presidential election, markets remain skeptical of Prime Minister Sébastien Lecornu’s ability to navigate €54 billion in proposed budget cuts through a deeply fractured National Assembly.

Fixed-income curves faced renewed upward pressure following a fresh spike in energy markets, where crude oil and European natural gas futures held near two-week peaks. The persistent energy price floor continues to complicate the European Central Bank’s inflation outlook, dimming hopes for aggressive monetary easing in the months ahead.

AI hyperscalers flood corporate credit desks, crowding out sovereign duration

Beyond macroeconomic friction, sovereign paper is facing intense competition from an unprecedented surge in primary corporate bond issuance, particularly from U.S. technology mega-caps.

AI “hyperscalers” and semiconductor infrastructure giants have tapped multi-currency debt markets – including reverse-Yankee euro-denominated tranches – to fund multi-hundred-billion-dollar capital expenditure programs for data centers and computing networks.

The heavy pipeline of mega-cap corporate debt sales has contributed to a wider widening of corporate credit spreads and elevated benchmark sovereign yields, as institutional investors demand higher term premia to absorb the relentless deluge of supply across fixed-income bourses.
