The June 19 federal holiday falls on a Friday this year. Here’s how trading hours and other services are affected.
This Friday is Juneteenth. Here’s how stock-market trading hours, U.S. mail and other essential services are affected by the holiday.
Juneteenth – a day that commemorates the end of slavery in the United States – is marked on Friday this year, and there are many closures related to the holiday, including financial markets.
Not every enslaved person actually gained their freedom after President Abraham Lincoln signed the Emancipation Proclamation on Jan. 1, 1863. The Civil War was still raging, and it also took time for people to hear about Lincoln’s directive. Juneteenth marks the events of June 19, 1865, when federal troops came to Galveston, Texas, where enslaved Black people were among the last to learn that they were free.
Juneteenth has been observed in Black communities for over a century. It was made the 12th official federal holiday by President Joe Biden in 2021.
“This is a day of profound weight and profound power, a day in which we remember the moral stain, the terrible toll that slavery took on the country and continues to take,” Biden said at the time. “I hope this is the beginning of a change in the way we deal with one another.”
Here’s what will be closed on Juneteenth, including how trading hours will be affected.
Is the stock market open on Juneteenth?
The New York Stock Exchange and the Nasdaq are closed on Friday, June 19, as are U.S. bond markets. Trading will resume as usual on the following Monday, June 22.
Are post offices closed? Do UPS and FedEx deliver on Juneteenth?
The U.S. Postal Service will not have regular mail service on Friday, and all post offices will be closed. Post offices will be open on Saturday, June 20, and regular mail service will resume then, too.
FedEx (FDX) and UPS (UPS) will continue to operate normally on Juneteenth, and their stores will be open for business.
Are banks open on Juneteenth?
Banks are generally closed, but your bank’s ATMs and banking apps will continue to operate as normal for you to withdraw, deposit or transfer money.
Are government offices open?
Because Juneteenth is a federal holiday, all nonessential federal government offices are closed. The day is either recognized as a legal holiday or observed in every state, so it’s a good idea to check in with state government offices regarding any services you might need prior to the holiday.
Are schools open?
Schools are typically closed on Juneteenth, but it’s always best to check with your local school or district for any changes to summer-school schedules. In some instances, U.S. private schools may have different holiday schedules.
