Sensex Today | Stock Market Highlights: Indian equity benchmarks witnessed a broad-based selloff on Wednesday after US President Donald Trump said he believed the memorandum of understanding (MoU) with Iran had ended, reigniting concerns over the West Asia conflict and pushing Brent crude close to $79 a barrel.

The Sensex tumbled 1,677 points to close at 76,504, while the Nifty fell 517 points to 23,882, with 46 of the index’s 50 constituents ending in the red. India VIX surged nearly 25%—its biggest single-day gain since April 2025—reflecting heightened market volatility.

All sectoral indices ended lower, with PSU banks and chemical stocks leading the decline. The Nifty Bank index dropped 1,458 points to 56,743, while the Nifty Midcap index fell 963 points to 61,323. Market breadth remained decisively negative, with the NSE advance-decline ratio at 1:5, underscoring widespread selling pressure.

Among individual stocks, Jio Financial Services, Shriram Finance, IndiGo and Maruti Suzuki were the top losers on the Nifty, while Mphasis, Bank of India, HPCL, L&T Finance and Coforge led losses in the midcap space. South Indian Bank plunged more than 8% after the Reserve Bank of India approved a three-year term for its new CEO.

On the gaining side, upstream oil companies outperformed as higher crude prices lifted sentiment, while downstream oil marketing companies came under pressure.
