Stock market today: Sensex, Nifty plunge as Trump’s Iran remarks, rising oil prices trigger broad-based sell-off
Benchmark equity indices Sensex and Nifty slumped more than 2% on Wednesday as escalating US-Iran tensions and a sharp surge in crude oil prices triggered broad-based selling across domestic markets.
Investor sentiment turned sharply negative after US President Donald Trump said the interim agreement with Iran was over, fuelling concerns over a wider geopolitical conflict and pushing global oil prices higher. Traders also cited pre-earnings caution, with investors bracing for subdued first-quarter corporate results amid weak global market cues.
The 30-share BSE Sensex plunged 1,677.12 points, or 2.15%, to close at 76,503.60. During the session, the benchmark had crashed as much as 1,921.69 points, or 2.45%, to an intraday low of 76,259.03.
Market breadth remained overwhelmingly negative, with 3,211 stocks declining, 1,070 advancing, and 173 remaining unchanged on the BSE. The NSE Nifty50 mirrored the sell-off, tumbling 516.65 points, or 2.12%, to settle at 23,882.05, as heavy selling across sectors erased recent gains.
