Billionaire Chris Rokos is to press ahead with the £175m restoration of his Wiltshire mansion despite switching his residency to Greece.
Mr Rokos, who is Britain’s third-highest taxpayer, became the latest billionaire to quit the country this week amid growing fears that Andy Burnham could usher in more tax rises targeting the wealthy.
The hedge fund tycoon and former Tory donor has a net worth of around $4bn (£3bn), according to Bloomberg’s Billionaire Index.
His exit raised doubts about the future of his 18th-century, 100-room manor estate in Wiltshire, which he has spent £175m transforming.
However, a source close to the development told The Telegraph it was “business as usual” with the renovation and there were no plans to sell the property.
The tycoon has been working to restore Tottenham House, near Marlborough, into a family home through a series of ambitious construction projects, including a tennis pavilion, cinema room and a solar farm.
However, the sprawling restoration project is not expected to be completed until spring 2028.
“The estate is not habitable at the moment so there’ll be a period of time when no one will stay there, but as and when he can, he [expects] to spend a lot of time there,” said the source.
“The reality is, he’s not said goodbye to Britain forever. He’s very much committed to completing this massive restoration at Tottenham House, but that won’t be ready until 2028.”
