European operator to make UK debut at newly developed Edinburgh hotel

European hospitality group MEININGER Hotels is set to make its UK debut, running a newly developed hotel in Edinburgh.

The 157-room hotel in the Haymarket area of the Scottish capital, developed by property company S Harrison, will open early next month.

MEININGER, a key player in the hybrid hotel market, currently operating 37 hotels across 27 European cities, has signed a long-term deal to operate the asset.

“After working meticulously to create a vision for this building that suited its size and location, before securing planning permission and selecting the right occupier, it’s fantastic to see it almost complete, before it opens next month,” said Ann Scott, managing director at S Harrison.

Development of the hotel saw a 1970s office building formerly known as Osborne House partly demolished, before two further accommodation wings were built and an additional top storey was added.

Ajit Menon, chief executive at MEININGER, said: “Expanding into Edinburgh is a key tactical milestone for our brand. The city’s resilient, year-round demand profile and diverse visitor base makes it a naturally high-yield market for our hybrid hospitality model.”

The hotel continues S Harrison’s investment in Edinburgh, following the delivery of the Malmaison boutique hotel in the city’s New Town, which opened in 2019.

In addition, S Harrison has recently secured planning permission for a purpose-built student accommodation scheme on Gillespie Crescent. The approved scheme will transform a vacant brownfield site within the Marchmont, Meadows and Bruntsfield Conservation Area into a 124-bedroom development.
