Labour is trying to kill the private landlord – I’m not giving up without a fight

I remain steadfast in my belief that a functioning private rental market is essential to supporting social mobility and, in turn, driving economic growth.

State housing should only ever be a back-up for the most vulnerable. It is neither the answer to our country’s problems, nor should it ever be the epitome of what people can achieve.

One day – hopefully soon – people will find that desire again to be their best selves and we will have a government that encourages aspiration.

During this difficult interlude, I will do all I can to protect what I have. I will only ever take gold-plated, triple-A-rated tenants with a working, home-owning guarantor and I will take out rent-guarantee insurance.

I will, as I’ve always tried to do, remain compliant with every new ludicrous scheme and regulation the Government brings in, should I deem that property to be worth the fight.

After more than two decades as a full-time portfolio landlord, I’ve learned a lot about the property market, about people, but also myself. I know to pick my battles wisely and I know some properties will no longer make the grade.

If there’s anything I’ve learned that I could impart during these challenging times, it is this: know when to quit.

Due to the size of my portfolio, I have spent many years dismantling a lifetime’s work. There have been, and continue to be, difficult decisions.

With my shareholdings in the stock market, I can’t control what happens in the world – but neither can I be held legally or financially accountable for those events. But that’s not the case for my properties. I will always try to be the best landlord I can be, and I hope because of that, my tenants will choose to be the best they can be.

I am still a firm believer that tenants and landlords can enjoy a long and happy relationship. Labour’s short-sighted politicians may try and tear this harmony apart, but I refuse to let them win.
