EU, Kazakhstan Accelerate Trans-Caspian Corridor Expansion with New Investments
The European Union and Kazakhstan have reaffirmed their commitment to expanding the Trans-Caspian International Transport Route (TITR), underscoring the corridor’s growing role as a strategic trade link between Europe and Asia.
The pledge came during the Third National Workshop of the TITR Coordination Platform in Astana, which brought together government officials, international financial institutions, development partners, national companies, and private-sector representatives to assess progress and outline future priorities, The Caspian Post reports via Kazinform.
The event was co-chaired by Kazakhstan’s Deputy Minister of Transport, Talgat Lastayev, and the European Union’s Ambassador to Kazakhstan, Aleska Simkic.
EU Backs Key Infrastructure Projects
Ahead of a high-level Trans-Caspian Transport Route meeting scheduled for June 23, participants discussed measures aimed at making the corridor faster, more efficient, and more reliable.
Ambassador Simkic said that the EU is supporting major infrastructure upgrades through its €30 million Trans-Caspian Transport Support Programme. Key projects include the modernization of Port of Aktau, preparations for the reconstruction of the Beyneu-Sekseul highway, and the digitalization of cross-border procedures.
Together with European financial institutions, member states, and Central Asian partners, the EU is working to reduce transit bottlenecks and strengthen connectivity across the region.
Cargo Volumes Surge Along Key Trade Route
Kazakhstan continues to play a central role as one of Eurasia’s most important transport hubs. Cargo volumes moving along the Trans-Caspian route have increased more than 3.5 times in recent years, while transit times between China and Europe have fallen significantly thanks to infrastructure investments and streamlined logistics processes.
Since 2024, the European Union and international financial institutions have allocated approximately €2.5 billion to support transport and connectivity projects across the region.
Workshop participants also examined plans to modernize the ports of Aktau and Port of Kuryk, expand rail and road infrastructure, attract private investment, and improve logistics services along the corridor.
Strategic Corridor Gains Global Importance
The meeting concluded with a renewed commitment to cooperation in infrastructure development, digital transformation, regulatory reforms, and investment initiatives aimed at strengthening the Trans-Caspian International Transport Route.
As global trade routes continue to evolve, the corridor is increasingly viewed as one of the most important links connecting Europe, Central Asia, and China, boosting Kazakhstan’s role as a gateway for Eurasian commerce.
