Fort Wayne mayor joins House Investments to break ground on affordable housing for seniors | Local
New affordable housing for seniors is coming to the Village Premier campus in southeast Fort Wayne following a groundbreaking Tuesday on a $14 million project.
Fort Wayne Mayor Sharon Tucker and representatives from House Investments celebrated the coming investment on property at 1902 McKinnie Ave.
The mixed-use, four-story housing development will include 50 housing units specifically designed for seniors with incomes below the area median income, the city said in a news release. The development has been called a vital component of the 2020 Southeast Development Strategy.
The 48,000-square-foot facility includes about 3,000 square feet of retail space on the first floor and exercise and laundry facilities.
“I’m pleased to see more private investment in southeast Fort Wayne and the Village Premier Neighborhood,” Tucker said in a statement provided after the groundbreaking. “Housing is one of my top priorities, and this project helps meet a critical need for more affordable housing for our growing senior population.”
Matt Gadus of House Investments said it’s exciting to kick off another project at the Village Premier development site.
“Our mission is to deliver projects that have an immediate impact for the residents and the surrounding community,” Gadus said in a statement. “This project will include 50 units of affordable housing for seniors, which will provide them the opportunity to age in place in their neighborhood. We are grateful to our partners, including the City of Fort Wayne, for their continued support for not only this project, but the overall master development plan.”
Village Premier is a 20-acre development at the southeast corner of South Anthony Boulevard and McKinnie Avenue. Fort Wayne Community Development purchased the property in 2010 and demolished the blighted McMillen Park apartments on the site in 2011.
House Investments, LLC is the master developer of Village Premier, which includes the $40 million Park’s Edge that has 208 affordable apartments, a clubhouse and various amenities. Village Premier is also the site of the $4.5 million Meridian Health Clinic that opened last fall.
Also on-site is the $4.5 million Meridian Health Clinic, which opened last fall. Several single-family homes have already been built; a total of 12 are expected on the Village Premier site.
Future phases are expected to include for-rent town houses and an early learning childcare center.
