Harris Teeter investing $253 million to renovate stores, open 3 new Charlotte-area locations

CHARLOTTE, N.C. (WBTV) – Harris Teeter will open three new stores and renovate many more as part of a $253 million investment in the Charlotte area, the grocery chain said Tuesday.

The grocery giant said in a Sept. 15 news release that the investment will “refresh and modernize” select stores.

Among those to be renovated include locations in Matthews, Waxhaw, Concord and Huntersville in North Carolina, and in Fort Mill and Rock Hill in South Carolina.

Harris Teeter said the renovations will include:

• Expanded offerings in fresh, bakery and prepared food areas
• Layout and fixture updates designed to support easier navigation in some stores
• Shopping cart, exterior or parking-area improvements at select locations
• Faster and more convenient pickup and delivery services
• Updated decor, signage and store environments

The grocer said the renovations would be done in “phases” over the next three years. Upon the completion of the updates, Harris Teeter said stores will have “grand re-opening” celebrations.

Harris Teeter also confirmed the opening of new stores in Fort Mill and Lake Wylie, S.C., and Kannapolis, N.C. Opening dates for those stores were not given in the Sept. 15 release.

“For generations, Charlotte families have made us a part of their neighborhoods and this investment reflects our long-term commitment to the customers and communities we serve,” Harris Teeter President Tammy DeBoer said in the release.

“These investments reflect areas where we believe we can better support our customers and communities — from select department and service enhancements to updates that improve convenience in stores.”

Harris Teeter opened its very first store all the way back in 1936, on Central Avenue in east Charlotte. Since then the brand has grown to include more than 250 stores along the East Coast.
