Inside Business 2026 Top Forty Under 40: Dr. Hans Boateng, The Investing Tutor – The Virginian-Pilot

Age: 39

Job: Founder, The Investing Tutor

At work: I’m an investment educator and wealth strategist. I help people build wealth by teaching them how to invest. No one really sits us down and teaches us how to build wealth. Wall Street is not really in the business of teaching people how to invest. It is in the business of taking people’s money, managing their investments and earning a percentage along the way. I teach individuals how to invest so they can have more autonomy and power over their finances and their wealth building. Even if they decide to work with a financial adviser or another financial expert, I still want them to understand what is happening with their money. Most of my sessions are done virtually, which allows me to work with people from all over.

Home and family: I was born and raised in Ghana, West Africa. I’m married to the love of my life, Tiff, and we have two children. While Williamsburg is home for us, I’m also a very proud African. I also consider William & Mary part of my family. I earned my Master of Business Administration there and the Tribe has remained a special part of my life.

Volunteer activities: I worked with the Akaa Project where we helped build a school in a local village in Ghana and supported the community there. Through my business, we have held events and programs at orphanages to give back to children. Here in Williamsburg, I volunteer at Life Church as one of the finance leads and host Heavenly Finances, a group within the church where we talk about faith, money, stewardship and investing.

Motivating factor: I want people in our community to build generational wealth. I’m tired of seeing people struggle. I want to see lives change. When good people have more financial resources, they can do more good. And the knowledge can be passed down to their children and hopefully continue for generations.

Advice to young people: Get to know Jesus Christ. Study His life. Learn about Him. Seek His guidance before you make major decisions and work incredibly hard.

Professional goal in five years: I want to continue expanding and building The Investing Tutor, serve more people and have a greater impact. I would also love to have more opportunities as a guest speaker at different events and share what I know with different audiences.

The one thing I’d change about Hampton Roads: I would love to see more opportunities for people to come together and provide more opportunities to connect. As the world becomes more digitized, real community will only matter more.

Region’s biggest asset: Honestly, the four seasons. You get to experience spring, summer, fall and winter here. Each season gives you something different, and I think that makes living in this region a great experience.

Downtime: I love spending time with my family, playing with my children and watching movies. During the summer, we usually take a lot of vacations. I also try to go back home to West Africa at least once a year, eat some of the local food and reconnect with my roots.

What really grinds my gears: When someone refuses to invest in themselves to learn and then makes a very expensive mistake. We would never get behind the wheel without learning how to drive. We would never jump into a pool without learning how to swim. But for some reason, people sometimes think that because they have money, it automatically makes them an investor. I always say, “Before you invest a dollar, invest in yourself first.”
