Gov. Gavin Newsom signed legislation Sunday providing $7 million in new investments for Los Angeles’ preparations for the upcoming 2028 Olympic and Paralympic Games.
Appearing at Exposition Park in front of Los Angeles Memorial Coliseum, Newsom signed the following bills:
— AB 2411. Requires the California Office of Emergency Services to negotiate and enter into agreements with state, local and out-of-state law enforcement agencies regarding temporary deployment to support the public safety demands of the 2028 Olympic and Paralympic Games. Establishes a temporary certification and training program through the Commission on Peace Officer Standards and Training for out-of-state law enforcement personnel assisting with security during the games.
— AB 2436. Extends the current exemption allowing Team USA student athletes training in California to receive resident tuition classification.
— AB 191. Implements temporary statutory amendments to ensure the successful and timely delivery of the 2028 Olympic and Paralympic Games and to meet the unique operational demands of this global event
The additional $7 million adds to the $96.5 million investment earlier this summer to upgrade and modernize Exposition Park, which is set to become the first venue to host three different summer Olympic Games.
“The Golden State is in the middle of a historic run of sporting events, and these bills allow the state the ability to continue to deliver for fans and athletes alike — all across the world,” Newsom said in a statement.
In addition to the 2028 Olympics and several World Cup matches earlier this year, the Los Angeles area will play host to the Super Bowl on Feb. 14, 2027.
“The 2028 Games are a once-in-a-generation opportunity to showcase California’s innovation and spirit on the world stage,” LA29 CEO Reynold Hoover said. “These actions reflect our shared ambition to create a Games that make Californians proud and benefit the communities welcoming the world in 2028. Thank you to Governor Newsom and the state Legislature for your steadfast support.”
The 2028 Olympic and Paralympic Games could generate between $20.5 billion and $40.6 billion in economic activity and support 126,000 to 224,000 jobs across the greater Los Angeles region, according to a recent study conducted by the Los Angeles County Economic Development Corporation’s Institute for Applied Economics.
