Trump administration lowers tariffs against Taiwan after TSMC announces $100 billion investment

The Trump administration has lowered tariffs against Taiwan.
The new rates come a week after the semiconductor manufacturer TSMC announced another round of massive investments in Arizona.
The administration says the reason for the new tariffs is that Taiwan has failed to enforce a prohibition on goods produced with forced labor. It has also posed those accusations against the U.K.
Still tariffs on imported goods from Taiwan have gone from 15% to about 10%.
In a recent investors call, TSMC’s CEO announced the company is bringing its total investments in the U.S. to $265 billion.
John Fowler is a semiconductor supply chain professor with ASU. He says tariffs have been a factor in TSMC’s decision to bring more investments to Arizona.
“I think the Taiwanese government can say to President Trump, ‘We’re already investing another $100 billion in the United States, we should get some credit for that,'” Fowler said.
The U.S. Supreme Court ruled earlier this year that Trump’s previous tariffs were illegal.
