TSA Gold Plus program aims to modernize airport security with private investments

Instead of waiting for federal funding, airports could invest directly in things like advanced scanners and expanded screening lanes.

CHARLOTTE, N.C. — The Transportation Security Administration is launching a new initiative called TSA Gold Plus.

The program would allow airports and airlines to use private investments to pay for new security technology and checkpoint upgrades.

TSA said that could mean shorter lines, faster screening and more comfortable security areas for travelers.

Instead of waiting for federal funding, airports could invest directly in things like advanced scanners and expanded screening lanes at no extra cost for passengers. The agency believes it could help modernize airports more quickly, especially as travel demand continues to grow.

Not every airport is expected to sign on right away. The program has its critics, who said the move could lead to the privatization of airport security.
