Ultra-luxury cruising is intensifying competition as both established players and new entrants refine their offerings, according to a report by The Maritime Executive. The segment, known for all-suite ships, butler service, and gourmet dining, has seen standards and fares rise as newer vessels surpass older ones in size and amenities.

The sector’s growth has attracted significant investment. Royal Caribbean Group acquired Silversea Cruises in 2018 for over $1.2 billion and has since added new ships. MSC Group is investing more than EUR3.5 billion in six ultra-luxury vessels for its Explora Journeys brand. Luxury hotel brands Ritz-Carlton, Four Seasons, and Aman have also entered the market, while Scenic Group and Swan Hellenic have expanded into expedition cruising.

Currently, 20 percent of new ships on order are for the ultra-luxury segment, with at least 16 additional vessels expected over the next decade, adding nearly 1 million gross tons and 10,000 berths. This influx is pressuring existing brands to enhance their offerings.

Regent Seven Seas Cruises, an early modern entrant, announced plans to improve its Explorer class ships during dry dockings in 2027 and 2028. The line will reduce suites from 373 to 344 per ship, enlarging entry-level suites and adding new categories. The company’s parent, Norwegian Cruise Line Holdings, has also ordered four new 77,000 gross ton ships for Regent, the first new class in a decade, with the first delivery scheduled for December.

Crystal Cruises, under new ownership, is investing in its fleet, with a third new ship ordered from Fincantieri. The first new vessel, Crystal Grace, is set to launch in June 2028, featuring all-veranda suites and high crew-to-guest ratios. MSC’s Explora Journeys launched its third ship in August, with three more planned by 2028.

Four Seasons, which began cruising this year, is redesigning its second and third yachts to reduce suites and introduce new residential-style accommodations. As wealth grows and travelers seek unique experiences, ultra-luxury cruising is expected to continue expanding, with new entrants raising the bar on luxury travel.
