Where Does Amitabh Bachchan Live? Discover the Actor’s Homes and Property Investments in India

Bachchan, who celebrated his birthday earlier this month, made his movie debut in 1969 with Saat Hindustani in 1969, and has continued to work over more than five decades of Hindi cinema – a remarkable run that very few in the industry can claim.

His property story is just as rooted in one place. Bachchan has been a Mumbai homeowner since 1976, and Juhu has stayed at the centre of it. Four bungalows in the same neighbourhood, Prateeksha, Jalsa, Janak and Vatsa, read less like a conventional portfolio than a family archive. Below, we take a closer look at each of his homes.

Where does Amitabh Bachchan live?

Jalsa bungalow, Juhu

Jalsa is the name of the two-storey bungalow in Juhu where Amitabh Bachchan lives with his family. It has a history that stretches back to the 1970s. The property, reportedly spread across approximately 10,125 square feet, once belonged to producer N.C. Sippy, who co-produced the 1975 comedy Chupke Chupke, starring Amitabh and his real-life wife Jaya Bachchan. The film was in fact shot at the bungalow, as were Anand, Namak Haram and Satte Pe Satta.

Bachchan has previously spoken about the home’s unusual journey into his possession. In a social media post marking the 46th anniversary of Chupke Chupke, he shared a photograph of himself and Jaya outside the bungalow, recalling that the family bought it, sold it and eventually bought it back before rebuilding it. Today, the house is now among Mumbai’s best-known celebrity residences, joining the ranks of Shah Rukh Khan’s Mannat. Its garden and entrancehave become familiar sights to fans who assemble outside its gates each Sunday, while inside, reports detail arched openings, antiques, artwork, pale walls and muted pastel tones. Bachchan has also identified the recording room as his favourite spot in the house.

A temple housing the Hindu idols Ram and Sita stands in the garden, and Bachchan reportedly visits the temple to pray right before stepping outside to greet fans. Another personal touch is a bench inspired by Madhushala, the celebrated collection of poems written by his father, Harivansh Rai Bachchan.

Prateeksha bungalow, Juhu

Prateeksha was the first home Amitabh Bachchan ever owned in Mumbai. The actor acquired the Juhu property in 1976, and his parents, poet Harivansh Rai Bachchan and Teji Bachchan, lived there with him. The bungalow’s name was chosen by his father, inspired by a line in one of his poems about a home that welcomes everybody and keeps nobody waiting. Bachchan recounted the story during an episode of Kaun Banega Crorepati. In November 2023, Bachchan and Jaya transferred the bungalow to their daughter, Shweta Bachchan Nanda.
