The Carthage Police Department is warning residents and local businesses to be on the lookout for counterfeit currency after a fake $20 bill was recently reported in the city.
In a social media post Thursday, the department shared an image of a counterfeit $20 bill and cautioned the public to be vigilant when accepting cash. The bill prominently displays markings such as “Motion Picture Use,” “Movie Prop Use Only,” and “Not Legal Tender,” indicating it was created as a prop and not intended for circulation as real currency.
Police encouraged businesses and individuals handling cash transactions to carefully inspect bills and report any suspected counterfeit currency to law enforcement.
The warning comes as the department prepares for a leadership transition.
During a recent meeting of the Carthage Board of Aldermen, Police Chief Billy McMillan announced that he will retire at the end of June, bringing to a close a law enforcement career spanning more than three decades.
The city has not yet announced who will succeed McMillan as police chief following his retirement.
