Fowey in Cornwall crowned Britain’s picture postcard town

New research has placed Fowey at the top of a list of Britain’s ten best-performing postcard towns and villages, with average house prices climbing from £350,000 in 2016 to £585,000 in 2026 – an increase of 67 per cent.

The historic south Cornwall port topped the rankings compiled by property management software provider Alto, which analysed long-term sales data from thousands of estate agents across the UK.

Fowey is renowned for its steep hillside setting, elegant Georgian townhouses, waterside cottages and stunning estuary views.

Its enduring popularity has also made it a magnet for celebrities and television productions.

Comedian Dawn French lived in a Grade II-listed mansion overlooking the River Fowey estuary for 15 years, while the town has recently enjoyed national exposure as a filming location for the hit BBC drama Beyond Paradise, starring Kris Marshall and Sally Bretton.

Often described as one of Cornwall’s most desirable places to live, Fowey has continued to attract buyers despite wider challenges in the housing market.

According to Alto, the town has significantly outperformed many other sought-after rural and coastal locations across Britain.

Riccardo Iannucci-Dawson, Alto’s chief executive, said: “Even in a depressed property market you will find bubbles which out perform other areas because they are gorgeous places to live. Fowey is one such place, along with all the others in the top ten.

“Alto allows agents to analyse long-term sales and rental data, going back decades, to market homes most effectively and extract the maximum value out of each new listing.

“We have access to sales data right across the UK from thousands of agents and can quickly highlight trends and local hot spots which may require a different sales strategy.”

Fowey was the only Cornish location to make the top ten, narrowly beating Hathersage in Derbyshire, where prices rose by 63 per cent over the same period.

The research found that picturesque communities with strong heritage appeal, attractive scenery and desirable lifestyles continue to deliver long-term gains despite fluctuations in the wider property market.

The top ten list was completed by Weobley in Herefordshire, Chiddingstone in Kent, Lacock in Wiltshire, Alrewas in Staffordshire, Clun in Shropshire, Painswick in Gloucestershire, Appledore in Devon and Montgomery in Powys.

Alto, which works with more than 6,000 estate agents across the UK, said around 35 per cent of estate agencies use its platform to analyse sales, lettings and property management data.
